Music for Funerals in Sussex and Surrey and Kent

I’m often asked for guidance on choosing music for a funeral, and the truth is, it’s so personal. There really are no rules when it comes to creating the soundtrack for a farewell.

But I appreciate that in itself can present an overwhelming amount of possibilities, especially if your loved one hadn’t expressed any specific wishes for the music chosen.

So I always say follow your instincts. Pick songs because they just feel right. It might be because the lyrics tell your loved one’s story, or because the tune once had everyone dancing in the kitchen. Maybe it’s special simply because they once had posters of the band or artist on their walls, or because it always made you all laugh with its sheer awfulness. Theme tunes, ditties, advert jingles… Whatever the reason, if it matters to you, it belongs.

Music doesn’t have to come from a playlist, either. Live music can bring a whole different energy to a ceremony. Think soulful violin or a lively jig. A gentle guitar strum or a full-on rock-out. A soaring operatic aria, a simple, lilting folk song or a warm and heartfelt jazz standard. An organ can be grand and traditional, while a trumpet can announce a triumphant final send-off. The beauty of live performance is its flexibility: musicians and vocalists can shape the mood in the moment, creating quiet reflection or joyful celebration exactly when it’s needed.

Some families like to weave in just a few favourite pieces between tributes and readings. Others skip speeches entirely and let music - recorded or live - do the talking. Both approaches are perfect. Music can fill silences, spark memories, and carry emotions that words sometimes can’t touch.

In the end, the right music - whatever that means to you - becomes more than background sound. It tells a story, brings comfort, and keeps their spirit present long after the last note fades
